A Picture of the playstation 4 controller, console, and eye toy

Sony’s press conference was one for the ages, but missteps along the way kept the company’s press conference from reaching total domination. The company has proven that it is “the brand” for gamers, with some key industry moves and landmark titles.  But first let’s take care of the facts:

  • $399 with a holiday release
  • There is no DRM
  • No online authentication
  • No need for constant online connection…you can play offline
  • You will need a PS Plus account to play online for the PS4
  • The PS Plus account works for all three devices: PS Vita, PS3, PS4

A Strong Finish For This Generation

Sony’s conference began with discussion of the PS Vita and Playstation 3.  Both consoles are still important to Sony, and the company proved it with a list of hits for each system.  The Vita will be getting season one of The Walking Dead and the newest episode, 400 days.  The handheld will also get some classic hd remakes like God of War 1&2, Final Fantasy X and X-2, Dead Nation, and Flower.  There is even a new Killzone game coming to the device.

The Playstation 3…honestly Sony has made it hard to move on to the Playstation 4 after the list of games still coming out for the PS3.

  • The Last of Us
  • Beyond: Two Souls
  • Grand Turismo 6
  • Grand Theft Auto 5
  • Batman: Arkham Origins
  • Puppeteer
  • Rain

That doesn’t even count the games that weren’t mentioned like Dark Souls 2.  It’s a great year for PS3 gamers.

Sony’s Indie Mob

Sony made a move similar to the old days of the NWO.  It has grabbed some of the most talented indie developers and brought them in the fold. Indie developers can self-publish to PSN(Playstation Network).  This means PSN indie section will work like the app store.  Good news for those who enjoy games from smaller developers.

Mismanagement of The PS4

Sony did a lot of good things last night…most of them stated at the beginning of this post.  But the company also had a few stumbles before getting to the good stuff.

Playstation 4′s New Look

Sony decided to play the waiting game back in February when it officially announced the Playstation 4.  Instead of showing us the new box they wanted to wait for E3.  Well when they finally unveiled the new hardware the impact wasn’t there.  It looks similar to the Xbox One.  Granted the PS4 has an angle design, but if you were to put the two consoles side by side it would look like they came from the same family. Sony should have shown their console first instead of letting Microsoft get there first.

Content..Content…Content

Gamers are a very fickle bunch. When Microsoft first unveiled their system everyone bashed them for focusing on TV.  But after yesterday’s press conference everyone knew Sony was going to come out with game announcement after game announcement for the PS4.  Imagine our surprise when the company began talking about content.  Sony Pictures, movie services, and a music service were the first things mentioned for the console.  As you can imagine people were sharpening their pitchforks in disbelief.  Good thing this didn’t last long.

Great Games and Huge Announcements

So after a few stumbles Sony put their game face one and played a strong 4th quarter.  Two games from Square-Enix sold many people on the new console:

  • Final Fantasy versus XIII which is now Final Fantasy XV
  • Kingdom Hearts 3

There weren’t any live demos, but the videos they did show had gameplay footage for both games. Final Fantasy XV could be the game that puts the series back on the map.  There were also live demos for Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed 4, which both looked great.   Then a compilation trailer for games like inFamous: Second Son and The Order: 1886.

Then we have the announcements, which cemented Sony’s “win” in the minds of many gamers.  Instead of following Microsoft, the Playstation 4 will not have any type of DRM or online check-in.  It is business as usual for the PS4.  Want to trade your games? Go ahead. Play off the disc? Sure.  Sony listened to the cries of gamers and delivered on all fronts, including the price. They were able to undercut Microsoft by $100.

Announcements Over Games

Sony had a good conference.  There were some missteps in terms of pacing, but overall it was a solid conference.  What was interesting about Sony’s conference was the importance placed on the announcements over the games.  People didn’t really care what games were going to come out for Playstation…they just wanted to know if it was cheaper and if it could play used games.  The lists of games were just a bonus.  Sony did deliver, creating in the minds of some a clear winner at year’s E3.

  1. Ok am I a little put off by the design… Ofcourse who wouldnt be! I mean this looks like a Brick! Damn XBox this looks like the original Nintendo LOL! But all jokes aside, I am EXTREMELY excited for this console. Now here is where the rubber meets the road tho, will Microsoft be willing to drop the price on Xbox to compete.

    • That’s a tricky question. You have to think that Microsoft is bundling the Kinect which is affecting the price of the console. Without it, I’m sure they could match the price but you’d lose the functionality built into the system. What they might do is drop the price for a 2 or 3 year live agreement.
