Last year I started taking notes when reading. With each Bookstagram post I will share those notes as well as link to where you can buy the book as well.
Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, wrote this book before writing his best seller. It’s an intriguring interview with “the devil” that follows the theme that man is only as successful as he thinks he is.
Notes & Quotes From The Book
The Other Self – The part of you that appears during times of great need, that gets you to push on and gives you the knowledge and power you need to become successful.
“My experience has taught me that a man is never quite so near success as when that which he calls ‘failure’ has overtaken him. For it is on occasions of this sort that he is forced to think”
A ‘failure’ is nothing more than an opportunity to think and gain new perspectives to try again.
Failure is a limitation that one sets up in their mind. If you think you’re a failure then there’s a strong chance that you will be.
Fear, is a self-generating morass. Once you begin to feed it, it will continue to do it’s thing on its own.
Napoleon Hill had many successful businesses, however in each one he continued to feel a need to do something else. No job scratched that itch like the one he was meant to do.
You must think it to be it. You must act on these impulses (within moderation). Listen to your “other self”, don’t let the voice go unheard.
The body contains two entities
- The first is ruled by fear
- The second is by faith
Faith knows no limitations or bounds. It does not know of the word fear. You must do what you can in order to make faith rule. How you think can allow the entity that runs on fear to lead the way.
Your other self will guide you intelligently in achieving for yourself the objects of your desire.
It always begins with your major or most pronounced desire. (What do you desire?)
There is a solution for every legitimate problem.
For every failure, setback and even adversity there is a seed of an equivalent benefit. You may not see it, but it is there.
Everyone who ever achieved something great had to go through a trial.
Take what you learn from the suffering. Let it fuel your success.
Helping others…it is one of the sources by which one has found success. For one, you will learn that your situation isn’t that bad as you think it is. Especially when compared to someone who is in a tougher situation. Secondly, the universe will repay your kindness in some way.
You want to focus on the purpose, not the method by which the purpose will be achieved.
Make prayer a part of your life!!!
Don’t worry about the plan, let God give you the plan.
Pray and give thanks about your current blessings, take inventory of the blessings that you currently have.
Your mind will act on your most prominent desires, you must train your mind to think correctly.
If you want to change your status in life, you must first change your beliefs
Whatever a man believes to be true has a way of becoming true.
One’s state of mind is the determining factor when prayer works, as well as when it does not.
In this world, you cannot operate as a lone wolf. You must work with others, sharing in their brainpower and working together to reach a common goal. Create a team of people that you can work with to achieve greatness.
Six most effective fears
- ill Health
- Loss of Love
- Old Age
Habits come in pairs, triplets and quadruplets.
It’s not just enough to be a thinker, but you must have control over your emotions.
Drifter – Someone who accepts whatever life throws at them without making a protest or putting up a fight. He doesn’t know what he wants from life and spends all of his time getting just that. He is controlled by circumstances outside of his own mind.
You must have an independent mind, you must be able to think for yourself.
Drifting is the most common cause of failure in life.
Pages 91 – 94 give a detailed description of a drifter and non-drifter
You want to be successful? You have to look past the failures and be able to overcome them. And work towards your goal.
Propaganda – any device plan, or method by which people can be influenced without knowing that they are being influenced or the source of the influence.
Over-indulgence in sex starts more men drifting toward failure r]than all other causes combined.
Everything having a real existence is capable of truth.
As you think it, as you are
Do not wait for an opportunity, create it!
What you think about, you attract

Pages 174 -178 discuss how the school system should work.
Every habit attracts a flock of it’s relatives
Failure is of the mind, it’s when you quit and never try again. When something fails it is an opportunity, something to learn from and gain from it. If you stay the course you will find that you are more powerful than you thought.
How you relate to and understand others is important to success and life. No man is an island.
A proper relationship is one that brings to all connected with it, or affected by it, some form of benefit.
Any relationship between people which damages anyone or brings any form of misery or unhappiness to any of the individuals
All people absorb and take over, either consciously or unconsciously the thought habits of those they associate with.
Changing your thought habits requires you to look at your work environment as well as your close friends and spouse/partner. If they are negative, chances are you will be as well.
Drifting is nothing but a state of mind, a state of mind conspicuous by its emptiness of purpose.

If you don’t spend time with positive thoughts, nature will put the negative in its place.
Time is the law of hypnotic rhythm
Wisdom is the ability to relate yourself to nature’s laws so as to make them serve you, and the ability to relate yourself to other people so as to gain their harmonious, willing cooperation in helping you to make life yeile whatever you demand of it
Accumulated Knowledge is not wisdom
You get wisdom through time and desired effort for it.
Desires = definite of purpose + definite of plans + hypnotic rhythm * time
Your thoughts and day to day activities will determine your outcome.
Habit establishes one’s rhythm of thought, and that rythm attracts the objects of one’s dominating thoughts.
