On December 26, Butler County Schools officials discovered flooding at two schools in the area after freezing weather burst a pipe in the sprinkler system on Christmas night.
The Greenville High School gymnasium suffered water damage when a pipe in the building’s sprinkler system burst. Entire floor systems, locker rooms, coach offices, concessions and foyers were flooded, leaving debris and damage throughout the building.
County maintenance staff, under the direction of Maintenance Director William, worked around the clock to mitigate the damage, and the Love and SaabPro crews began working to mitigate further damage.
Officials are working to relocate games and events until repairs are completed, according to Butler County Superintendent Joseph Island.
“We’re in the process of making a deal with the company to come over to Greenville Middle School and redo the floors,” Eiland said on Thursday. Instead, we can play our home games here in Greenville.”
The cold Christmas night also hit the Georgiana school, bursting pipes in the sprinkler system and flooding the pre-kindergarten classroom.
Water from the leak spread into hallways and adjacent classrooms, and Servpro worked with the school system’s maintenance department and administrators to clean up the flooded areas.
Eiland said Principal Deedra Benson has moved Pre-K classrooms to different areas of the campus. No interruption of class is expected.
Island said the damage to the high school gymnasium would affect the school’s basketball season as students get used to practices and games at different facilities.
“[The season] “The kids will get used to playing on certain courts, so they’ll be suspended,” Eiland said. It’s not the place.”
