CS Mvurya bans recreational activities along Indian Ocean and Lake Victoria beaches
After two people drowned on the Jomo Kenyatta public beach, Mining Minister Salim Muvriya has banned all recreational activities, including swimming, after 5:30 p.m. on the beaches of the Indian Ocean and Lake Victoria.
The order came hours after two people died on Sunday at Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach, also known as Mombasa’s Pirate Beach, following the boating tragedy.
In a statement, Coastal Area Coordinator John Erngata said the boat, originally from India, with 11 passengers, five adults and six children capsized at around 17:40.
Elungata said 10 passengers were rescued and taken by ambulance to Premier Hospital shortly after the boat capsized, but one woman was confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The body of a man known as David, who was on the boat, was recovered about 1.5 kilometers from the scene of the tragedy and taken to the Coast General Hospital morgue.
He said the family was traveling to a coastal city to celebrate Christmas when the tragedy struck.
