Hays Public Library will launch three new programs in 2023.
The library has launched a new event series called Hobby Jumping.
“It’s kind of a fun way for people to try new things and see if it’s a hobby they’d like to explore,” said Library Communications Coordinator Callie Collakney.
Hobby Jump is held twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Mondays at 5pm. New topics are introduced every month. January’s topic is easy chair yoga.
February’s topic is Amateur Geology, March’s topic is Bread Baking, and April’s topic is Nature Journal.
“It’s a fun way to learn about something different and see if you want to explore it further,” said Kolacny.
The library will begin the Spice Series on January 12th at 6pm and will run every Thursday night through February 9th. The program is a partnership with Topeka’s Moburts Specialty Grocery.
See below for a list of topics covered.
“I think there are a few samples every week for people,” Kolacny said. “It’s something that cooks explore in our area.”
If you’re more into the culinary arts, the library has reopened its cookbook club after a break during the pandemic. The group meets on the second Thursday of each month at 11:00 am. Home cooks can create and bring in dishes from one of her two cookbooks chosen for the month.
This month’s books are Marvel Eat the Universe: The Official Cookbook and House of Vinegar: The Power of Sour.
The library has added the Fantasy Book Club to its list of reading groups. The group will meet at 6:00 pm on the last Monday of the month. His first club meeting will be on January 30th.
This group will explore subgenres of fantasy, with Gothic fantasy on the agenda for the first month. The book will be “Sabriel” by Garth Nicks.
This joins the Cozy Mystery and True Crime book clubs. The Kansas Room runs its own book club. Timothy Egan’s discussion of “The Worst Hard Time” will take place in person on January 12th at 6:30pm and online on January 17th at 7pm.

The Hays Public Library Foundation will host an Afternoon Tea Party on February 5th from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Tickets are $35 and are on sale now on the library website.

A complete list of library events can be found on the website hayslibrary.org. This includes a long list of activities for the child and her teens, including a Bluey Party on March 25th at 1pm. Bluey makes an appearance in person.
A printed version of the event calendar is also available at the library.
