John Schickel: My favorite time of the year — and a time for local activities and local shopping

Christmas time in Boone County is my favorite time of year. This is the perfect time to patronize the many fine local merchants. I am so fortunate to be able to represent the people of Boone County, some of the greatest people in the world. to

Some of my favorite Christmas activities I recommend include the First Church of Christ Christmas Concert. This is a community favorite event.

I also highly recommend the “Christmas Town” light display at the Creationist Museum and the drive-thru light display at the Boone County Fairgrounds. The Creationist Museum exhibits include bonfires, seasonal snacks, and sometimes Christmas carols. Check creationmuseum.org for hours and hours.

Christmas time is also the end of the year. As a state senator, I would like to reflect on the accomplishments of the past year. There is a lot of road work going on in Boone County and we know the work is a nuisance.

As a state senator, I want to report that there has been record state investment in roads. I am particularly pleased with the completion of the Pleasant Valley Road corridor. Fourteen years ago, when I was first elected to your State Senate, we started buying that site. This completes the modern he four-lane highway from Union to Hebron, a major transportation route. I drive it often and am very happy with the results.

Another major legislative achievement that I am happy with has reformed the school governance model so that parents and the general public have more say in how the school system operates and the school curriculum. That’s it. With the cooperation of various stakeholders, we have finally been able to realize this reform over the course of seven years.

I will be representing you again in Frankfort in January at a conference, and it is very important to me what your priorities are for the state.
