Going on a safari or embarking on a new technology at this time of year may seem daunting, but it looks like it will become more possible with a variety of activities taking place at the Columbus Public Library next month.
Every Thursday, Brad Hruska, Director of Children’s Services, hosts Storytime, and every other week is StoryArt Week with themed crafts. On January 12th, we will feature paper bag monkeys with a jungle theme.
“This week’s theme is Wildlife Safari. it was I’m going to read fun books about different animals, like lions and monkeys,” said Hruska.
Hruska added that the StoryArt hours, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., aren’t just about reading and crafting. Children can socialize and socialize with other children in spaces with common interests, while parents can interact with other parents and watch their children have fun and learn.

“They come here and meet different kids from different backgrounds, play with them and work on different skills,” Hruska said.
For teenagers, the anime club on January 19th and the manga club on February 7th, both at 5:30 pm
Youth Services Librarian Jessica Wilkinson says teens and adolescents have similar opportunities for socialization, just with different interests such as games and favorite graphic novels and shows. . For that specific purpose, there will also be a Teen Drop-In on January 22nd from 2-3pm.
“They give teenagers a place to enjoy the same activities that other teenagers enjoy,” said Wilkinson. I have homeschooled kids and they can all get together at the library to share their love of manga and anime and make new friends.I love it.”
For toddlers through teens, the library has a chapter book reading program, with prizes for those who reach benchmarks. 1st grade through her 6th grade had Word Warriors, Seventh Through grade 12, there are Page Paladins. Tweens also have a specific night on February 10th from 6:30pm to 9:00pm.drop in but from grades 4 to 6.
For adults, the library will be open during regular Makerspace hours, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 12pm and Tuesday from 5pm to 7pm. Makerspaces with some creative technology are great learning opportunities, said adult services librarian Rachel McPhillips.
“In that field, you have the opportunity to be really creative, original, and learn new skills. 3D Create your favorite coffee tumbler decal by printing, using a sublimation printer to make a coffee mug, or cutting out vinyl with a Cricut,” says McPhillips.
According to McPhillips, the adult book club kicked off the year with Ashley Audrain’s “The Push,” and will meet on January 26 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss it. Tech Tuesdays, held every Tuesday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, are a place for tech users to learn more about technology in a relaxed environment free of judgment and time constraints.
“All of our programs are tailored to support lifelong learning from the youngest to the oldest in our community, whether they are learning to read or helping teens learn in a mother- or father-less environment. It gives them the opportunity to learn how to socialize, to learn new literacy, and to make connections with technology that is literacy in itself,” says McPhillips.
