MANSFIELD – Local public schools again participated in several community projects this year to spread holiday cheer and help those in need. Here is a summary:
Roland Green Preschool
The Roland Green Preschool Parent Group organized a clothing movement to benefit the West Side Benevolent Circle. The group collected socks, underwear, pajamas and stocking stuffers to donate to those in need. Roland Green staff also donated gift cards to Circle.
Robinson and Jordan/Jackson
Robinson and Jordan/Jackson Elementary School staff organized a Holiday Giving Tree to benefit West Side Charitable Circles. A teacher chose a mitten from a donation tree showing items requested by specific children in town and purchased the item for that child. All requests have been fulfilled.
Students, staff and families from both schools also donated hats, mittens, socks and underwear to support circles organized through the Mansfield Elementary School Association.
Both schools also participated in the annual food drive sponsored by MESA to benefit Our Daily Bread. About £4,699 of food was raised, bringing him nearly £600 more than last year’s contributions.
Also, Jordan/Jackson art teacher Tara Kanefsky and her students decorated posters for the Toys for Tots drive sponsored by the Rotary Club of Mansfield. posted on the box.
Quarters Middle School
Students, families and staff joined the online Giving Tree to support the Westside Benevolent Circle and all requests have been met. After Halloween, the students donated leftover candy to send to American troops overseas. A total of 470 pounds of candy was collected.
Also, students in Christine Morris’s 7th grade social studies class created holiday cards for soldiers serving in Naples, Italy.
mansfield high school
A gift card drive was held to support the Benevolent Circle. A snowflake picking drive allowed staff to purchase gift cards for teenagers in the community.
In partnership with the Student Service Corp, the school hosted a sock, mitten and glove drive to benefit the Attleboro Area Interfaith Collaborative, a local network of volunteers helping those in need. High schools also collected unwrapped toys for children in need through collection boxes in the lobby.
Prior to Thanksgiving, the SSC participated in the annual Turkish Bridgegate with personal best karate. Students collected brownie mixes from other students and staff and filled 2,000 roasting pans with his Thanksgiving dinner supplies. SSC members also created Thanksgiving cards to accompany the dinner and participated in the assembly of the meal.
Superintendent Teresa Murphy said, “Each year we are amazed at the generosity of our community members through our holiday clothing and food drives. It can be a difficult time for people, so we should be proud to find ways to make this season a little more special for those in need.”
Additional holiday events and activities include:
- The high school held a Caroling at Home event on Monday, where students performed songs for elementary school students.
- The high school held a winter concert on Thursday, to which the entire community was invited, and the middle school held a winter concert last Wednesday.
- The Mansfield High School Choir provided entertainment at the Mansfield Council on Aging Annual Holiday Luncheon on December 9th.
- The high school’s performing arts department staged “Elf the Musical” from December 9th to 11th.
- Also, high school marching bands and color guards marched in the November 27 Veterans Day Parade and the Town’s Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting under the direction of Justin DeJoy.
