Editor’s Note: The following is from the latest Merced SPCA Newsletter.
Our volunteers spayed, neutered, vaccinated and chipped over a dozen homeless cats in November. I was able to leave 3 kittens with loving foster parents waiting for adoption. Plus, we found her a wonderful forever home for three.
This month has been a very difficult month for the Merced SPCA. Our local vet we have been dealing with for years has discontinued their TNR (trap, neuter and release) drop off protocol. Now I have to make a reservation for the captured kitten for TNR. It is impossible to know whether to catch a kitten. They have an appointment 45 days after her, continuing to add to our challenges in this dilemma.
We are currently in contact with other veterinarians and they are working with us on a ‘drop off on trapping day’ protocol. , paying three times as much as before. We continue to TNR all stray cats possible, including vaccinations and chipping.
Our wonderful feeders are stretched daily to ensure our colony is loved, fed, cared for and performing to the best of our ability.
Our foster parents are wonderful. Our TNR volunteers work hard and relentlessly. Believe us, we cannot continue without each and every one of these wonderful and dedicated volunteers. More colony keepers, more fosters, more volunteers to TNR We need it! Think of what you can do to save the lives of these innocent cats.
Sadly, this month I helped a family with their beloved pet cross the Rainbow Bridge. We also provided some financial support while they suffered losses. We recently financially helped spay and neuter two puppies as their owners had recently lost their jobs.
This is part of what we do every month with the help of our amazing volunteers, sponsors and SPCA members. Our local chapter would like to increase TNR, training and awareness programs, but desperately needs volunteers and financial support.
In the past 24 months, we have TNRed over 800 homeless and abused cats, provided care for over 102, found loving homes for over 59, and sadly rescued them from injuries and devastating illnesses. I had to put 63 kittens to sleep.
