MLK Day plans include celebration, youth activities

The 28th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Celebration will be held on MLK Day on January 16th from 7-9am. Doors open at 6am.

The event will be held at the Statesville Civic Center at 300 S. Center St. in downtown Statesville.

The theme for 2023 is “Moving Forward: No Turning Back.”

Guest speaker is Dr. Kenston J. Griffin. He is the founder and CEO of Dream Builders Communication Inc., a best-selling author, and an accomplished trainer and coach.

K-12 Youth Day will be held Saturday from 10am to 2pm at the Unity Center at 1145 Salisbury Road. A light meal will be provided. Arts & Crafts, Spoken Words, Songs, Cross-Cultural Experiences. Guest speakers will encourage youth and teach King’s message.

A celebration will be held on Sunday afternoon, January 15, from 4-6 pm at First Baptist Church at 815 Davie Avenue.

The public was invited to participate in the first celebration since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. All events are free.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day activities are organized by the Iredel County MLK Planning Commission and are supported by the City of Statesville, local businesses, churches and individuals as a 501©(3) charity.
