Mount Bohemia, Keweenaw Mountain Lodge offer seasonal snowshoe activities starting this weekend

KEWEENAW COUNTY, Michigan (WLUC) – Outdoor enthusiasts can look forward to two different snowshoe activities this weekend.

On Saturday nights, Keweenaw Mountain Lodge offers moonlit, narrated snowshoe hikes.

The event is held once a month, depending on the weather, and this is the second year.

Talk about the history of the mountain huts and the night sky while walking in the moonlit landscape.

“They really cater to all levels of people,” says Keweenaw Mountain Lodge Outdoor Activities Lead Chris Guibert. “Anyone can join, even if you’re a beginner. They’re free. You have to come and sign a waiver.”

The park began offering activities during the application process to become an approved international dark sky park in June.

“We delivered three of them last year,” continues Guibert. This is one of many things we try to add an educational dimension to what we offer as part of Dark Sky Park. ”

Also, for the first time on Sunday mornings, Mount Bohemia offers a weekend of guided snowshoe hikes on its 20km trail system.

It lasts an hour and a half and ends with a pancake breakfast in the main yurt.

“Our trails are so beautiful,” said Verne Barber, Mount Bohemia General Manager. “And there are a lot of them.

Depending on its success, there may even be an opportunity for additional rate hikes in the future.

“Maybe it will blossom, and if it goes well, you may end up having to do more in the morning, or even at night,” Barber continued. Let’s see if it’s popular.”

The moonlit snowshoe hike begins at 8:00 PM. The participant is advised to arrive 30 minutes before he arrives to check the equipment.
