Schools in Memphis Shelby County have announced that all after-school activities on Friday will be canceled following news of the release of a Tyre Nichols video late at night.
Cancellations include all college basketball games scheduled for Friday night.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Tyre Nichols’ family and those in the Mid-South affected by this tragedy,” MSCS said in a release. “For public safety, we are canceling all after-school activities on Friday, January 27, including YCare and sporting events.”
At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy spoke with media officials at the press conference about the five officers involved in Nichols’ death.
All five officers were charged and charged with one count of second-degree murder, aggravated assault, two counts of aggravated kidnapping, two counts of obstruction of justice, and one count of obstruction of justice.
MSCS has not disclosed when Friday’s event will take place, nor has it decided whether Saturday’s event will also be cancelled. Decisions regarding Saturday’s event will be made by 10pm on Friday.
MSCS said, “We are taking these steps with great care to reflect and navigate through these difficult times for our community.
