MEMPHIS, Tennessee — Prior to the release of Tyre Nichols’ arrest video, Memphis Shelby County schools canceled all after-school activities on Friday for public safety reasons.
In a statement, MSCS said all school-related activities, including YCare and sporting events, will be canceled after 5 p.m. Friday.
The school district’s family wellness center will also be closed at this time.
Saturday’s 2023 School Choice Showcase has been postponed to Feb. 4, according to MSCS.
The school district said it would “monitor” the event and announce decisions regarding additional Saturday activities and games by 10 p.m. Friday.
In a statement, MSCS said, “We are taking these steps with great care and consideration to help us navigate through a difficult time for our community.
On Thursday, Nichols’ family called for peaceful protests in hopes that footage of his arrest will be released after 6 p.m. Friday.
