This column regularly features monthly activities, but it’s easy to miss.
I would like to share some more details about some of them. There are some details in the Upcoming Events section below.
A new one I haven’t had before is at the National Center for Children’s Illustrated Literature in Abilene. It is targeted.
Over an hour, this free program lets kids listen to stories read aloud, sing color songs, explore different art elements, and immerse themselves in art projects. Instructors keep everything at an age-appropriate level.
Another activity for some age levels is the BLANK (Bridging Literature and Art with NCCIL Knowledge) box. Each box contains a children’s book by a noted artist from the past. There are art materials that allow children to create their own works based on their impressions of reading books and looking at pictures in books.
Program is changing. Starting in February, artists currently exhibiting will appear in the box. I still have the boxes from the past exhibits.
“Birthday Box” is also available. Your child can choose from birthday related books and all the same art supplies are included in the box. Various boxes are $39.95 each.
Finally, NCCIL hosts free art activities every Saturday from 10am to 1pm (check ahead for holiday weekends for rescheduling and cancellations).
A block away, the Grace Museum hosts another program for preschoolers on the first Thursday and Friday of each month (next February 2nd and 3rd).
At “Tot Spot,” kids can explore a variety of art projects and media, and have time to explore the spark area. $7 for non-members (free for Grace members). Pre-registration is required, but walk-ins are welcome if space is available.
