Spartanburg, South Carolina (WSPA) – The City of Spartanburg is working hard to ensure that the closure of the Ferris Wheel does not crush the holiday spirit.
The wheel unexpectedly closed less than a week after opening.
City officials said they are considering what to do instead to maintain the holiday spirit.
We have a list of upcoming events for the whole family to enjoy.
“Our Special Events team got together earlier this week and started thinking about what we could do for the rest of the holiday season,” said Chris George.
Instead of a Ferris wheel, Spartanburg residents can enjoy multiple events made to spread holiday cheer.
“This is all new to us and something we’ve come together. Wrapping up for the holiday season,” said George.
The city’s Chris George said there will be two movie features on Wednesday, December 21.
On Christmas Eve, you can enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride from Denny’s Plaza. And the holiday fun doesn’t end after Christmas.
“We had a great year in Spartanburg, especially downtown, and we just want to celebrate it,” said George.
The city is hosting a block party on December 29th.
“There will be several vendors that have been very popular at some of our events,” says George. “We’re going to have food and live music and some games.”
George said he wanted to do something meaningful.
“We didn’t want the downtown area to be empty during the holiday season. We wanted to make sure we filled that gap,” he said.
Mayor Jerome Rice said when he heard residents complain about the wheels, they knew it had to stop.

“We want to keep everyone safe, keep everyone happy, and make Spartanburg a great place,” the mayor said.
All events are free.
“We don’t want cost to be a barrier, especially during the holiday season,” says George.

George said, “Thank you for your understanding.
“Really get off and experience Morgan Square and downtown Spartanburg,” said Mayor Rice.
George said there would be a detour to take the carriage, but they don’t have a list yet.

- Wednesday, December 21stst 5:30 PM: Two movie screenings in the park area of Morgan Square.
- Christmas Eve, December 24: Free horse-drawn carriage ride starting at Denny’s Plaza from 12:00pm to 3:00pm
- Saturday, December 29: Block Party on Spring Street, 6-6:30 PM
