Live Activities are new in iOS 16.1 and have been improved in iOS 16.2 to allow for more frequent updates. This allows your iPhone to display live updates from third-party apps through either the iPhone 14 Pro’s dynamic islands or lock screen. This live tile shows game scores, weather information, package deliveries, and much more.

This type of live information is streamed from the app’s servers or refreshed in the background on the iPhone to provide the latest, at-a-glance information from third-party apps.

You can enable live activity by following these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to the app where you want to enable the live activity feature.
  3. Enable live activity toggle.

Apple provides this as a toggle option in the settings as it can increase battery drain on your device. As you weigh your options, consider the tradeoffs between staying up to date and battery life.

Once complete, the app will be able to use system settings, but additional configuration may be required if you want to enable live activities from the app itself. Check the specific app you’re using to see any additional steps you may need to take. Most apps show live activity on the lock screen when the app is closed.

Since this feature is new in iOS 16.2, it will take some time for developers to adopt this new feature as it is not yet built into all apps on the device. Mileage from enabling this feature varies by third-party app.
