W.Va. Wildlife Center announces Groundhog Day activity schedule


FRENCH CREEK, WV — Longer winter or earlier spring? increase.

This is Freddy’s 46th Groundhog Day Prediction at the West Virginia State Wildlife Center in French Creek in Upshire County. The free event will begin at 9:30 am on his February 2nd and will be open to the public and media.

Wildlife Center Wildlife Biologist Trevor Moore said: “We have some special activities planned and hope to see people and their families having a fun morning at the wildlife center.”

Those wishing to participate in the Wildlife Center Groundhog Day activities should plan to arrive at the Wildlife Center Amphitheater by 9:30 AM Freddy’s will provide the weather forecast at 10:00 AM Freddy’s As predicted, guests can win prizes in the 10th Annual Woodchuckin’ Contest.

Other activities include:

  • Meet and Greet French Creek’s Freddy Mascot
  • Music performance by the French Creek Elementary School Choir
  • Complimentary hot chocolate and cookies in the gift shop
  • project wildlife activities

To reach the Wildlife Center from I-79 North, take Exit 99 and follow US-48/US-33 East for 12 miles to Buckhannon, then WV-20 South for 12 miles. From I-79 South, take Exit 67 on Flatwoods and follow US-19/WV-4 North for approximately 30 miles to Rock Cave. Make sure you have the right to stay on WV-4 North at the US-19/WV-4 junction. From Rock Cave, follow WV-20 North for 2 miles to the Wildlife Center.
